At Kirklees College we are always looking for new talent and welcome applications from all sectors.
Whether in a teaching & learning role or in one of our specialised Business Support functions, you’ll be involved in nurturing and developing the next generation of construction workers. We’re already a successful college, but we’re continually striving to be better and do better — be part of our story!
In the role of Learning Mentor (SEND) – English & Maths, you will provide targeted coaching, mentoring and learning support to students with SEND, helping them to successfully engage with English and maths provision, improve attendance, participation and achievement, and develop the skills and confidence needed for further education, employment and independent living. You will work collaboratively with curriculum, Inclusive Learning and Student Experience teams to identify and address barriers to learning and promote inclusive practice within English and maths settings.
Your key responsibilities will include providing targeted support to students with SEND who require additional assistance to engage successfully in English and/or maths. Through a combination of one-to-one coaching, small group interventions and in-class support, you will help students overcome barriers to attendance, confidence, motivation, behaviour and achievement. You will support learners to develop independent learning skills, resilience, organisation, self-advocacy and effective study habits, while encouraging positive engagement with their learning. The role will involve helping students access learning through the effective use of assistive technology, adaptive resources and other learning aids, as well as monitoring attendance, engagement and progress to ensure timely interventions are put in place where concerns arise. Working proactively with students at risk of disengagement or non-achievement, you will collaborate closely with English and maths staff and colleagues across other internal services to provide coordinated and effective support. You will maintain accurate records of interventions, support provided and learner outcomes, while recognising, recording and referring safeguarding concerns in line with college procedures.
It's important that you're able to build positive relationships with young people, adapt your approach to meet diverse learner needs, and demonstrate our College values of Kindness, Unity and Excellence in everything you do. Experience of supporting young people with SEND or delivering coaching, mentoring or learning interventions would be advantageous. Due to the nature of our work, it's essential that you are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
We believe learning is not just for our students — it’s an important part of working here too. Staff development opportunities include mentoring, funded qualifications and leadership development. You’ll also have access to a range of benefits including an employee assistance programme, retail and leisure discounts, and reduced Metro travel.
We want people who believe in the value of education, and who can contribute to our culture of supporting and challenging one another.
Staff who start mid Academic year will have their initial salary payments calculated based on actual weeks worked and the number of pay dates between the beginning of employment and the end of the current academic year.
Closing Date: 15th October 2026
