At Kirklees College we are always looking for new talent, and welcome applications from all sectors.
Whether in a teaching & learning role or in one of our specialised Business Support functions, you’ll be involved in nurturing and developing the next generation of construction workers, engineers, health workers and countless others.
We’re already a successful college, but we’re continually striving to be better and do better - be part of our story!
In the role of Pastoral Mentor, you'll predominantly be based at Waterfront, providing dedicated pastoral support to a caseload of 16–18 ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students. Working closely with curriculum, safeguarding and support teams, you'll help students overcome personal, social and academic barriers, enabling them to engage fully with their studies and achieve successful outcomes.
Your key responsibilities will include delivering one-to-one and group pastoral interventions; monitoring students’ attendance, wellbeing and progress; helping them address challenges that affect their learning; and making referrals to internal and external support services. You will work closely with colleagues to help students succeed. You will also be allocated a caseload of looked-after children (LAC) and attend their Personal Education Plan (PEP) meetings.
Ideally, you'll be educated to Level 3 (or be able to demonstrate equivalent ability) and have experience of supporting 16–18-year-old students in an educational or pastoral setting. You'll be an excellent communicator with the ability to build positive relationships with young people from diverse backgrounds, including those whose first language is not English. You'll demonstrate empathy, resilience and a commitment to helping students overcome barriers to learning, while embodying our college values of Kindness, Unity and Excellence.
Due to the nature of our work, it’s essential you’re committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
We believe learning is not just for our students: it’s an important part of working here too. Staff development opportunities include a mentoring scheme, financial contributions for external qualifications and skills development for current and aspiring managers. You’ll also have access to a range of staff benefits including an employee assistance programme, retail and leisure discounts and reduced Metro travel.
We want people who believe in the value of education, and who can contribute to our culture of supporting and challenging one another.
